Glasgow Zine Fair 2024
Gaada co-founder and zine-making-enthusiast Daniel Clark, recently took a break from the workshop to attend the 2024 Glasgow Zine Fair - one of Scotland’s most exciting annual fairs for artist self-publishing.
The 2024 edition of GZF boasted over 40 makers from the UK and worldwide showcasing their work, including several Shetland-produced zines published by Gaada and were sold via the GZF Community Table.
Daniel explains: “For me, collecting for Gaada always feels like an opportunity to think about the artists and themes in habiting the workshop and also, bring in new ideas and resources to fuel the creative exploration of Shetland’s artist community. Of course it also provides a great point to discover and build connections with artists and publishers outside of the archipelago - which always has the potential to lead into future collaborations!
Some of the themes in the Zines collected during my trip include: Snacks, Body Dysphoria, Queer-Body Euphoria, Rights of way, Cruising, Furbies in Art, scultupral explorations of non-binaryhood, Medieval Geese, growing and allotments, Endometriosis, Cats-as-protagonists (bringing Button’s of Minn Beach vibes), WTF is Fracking, Beautiful explorations of recovery after Mental Health collapse, Mr Blobby personal critique, reclaiming langugage around autism, UFOs, survior stories, and bathing….… to name but a few…..”
These amazing publications will now be catalogued and added to Gaada’s Island Zine Library (IZL) which is a special collection of nearly 600 rare artist-made publications covering diverse subjects, printing methods, and bindings. These publications are available to browse within the Workshop but also through the IZL Digital Catalogue which can be accessed here.
The digital catalogue is a work in progress, and is by no means comprehensive of the current collection. Gaada will soon be looking for volunteers to help us get through the cataloguing backlog - so if you are Shetland-based and interested in self-publishing/digital cataloguing please consider getting in touch.
