Display by Jennifer McLeaskintosh

Git Ootside, Inner Bairn is the next exhibition on Display by Jennifer McLeaskintosh, opening on 30th July and running until 5th September.

Jennifer McLeaskintosh (they/them) is a multidisciplinary autistic artist who has lived in Shetland their whole life. They believe ‘the personal is political’ and identify as an intersectional feminist. Through exploration of the Risograph medium they have created a series of delicate and powerful prints.

“In a time of personal struggle and heartache, this project helped give me permission to explore my own creativity. I began by diving deep into my old sketch books and journals, finding a new appreciation for the beautiful marks and imagery of my past work. I was reminded of the cyclic nature of growth. I wanted these pages to be seen and honoured. I want the internal to be made external in a way that was the right amount of challenging for me. I felt proud of my old artwork and words, I realised I had a wealth of material (some which had never seen the light of day) right at my fingertips. With the scanner I liberated elements from old sketchbook pages – recurring themes of light, bleeding hearts, Huggin and Munnin (Odin’s Raven; Thought and Memory). These became the foundations on which I added fresh drawings to create a series new, layered and grungy print-based works.

These final prints collectively titled ‘Git Ootside Inner Bairn’ are an exploration of my relationship with myself and different aspects of family; children, spouse, siblings, parents: with themes of connection, communication, perspective, thought and memory. This process helped unblock my emotions, learn a new methodology, gain a new skill in Risograph and renew my love of art; ready to restart my socially engaged practice with my LGBT+ community of Shetland.”

Gaada welcomes visitors to view the current Display within the gravelled area outside the building, however we politely request that visitors do not enter the building without prior appointment. This ensures Gaada is able to continue maintaining a safe working environment within the workshop.

This project was funded by the Shetland Charitable Trust
