Collaborative Murals by Hamnavoe School + Gaada Unveiled

A series of new murals painted by Gaada are now on display at Hamnavoe Primary School.

The artworks are a result of recent workshops between Gaada and the school's 86 pupils. The murals act as a bright and bold welcome to the grounds and are a celebration of both the school and local community.

The creation of these murals is part of wider recognition of the schools 40th birthday. Initiated by this anniversary, these murals are the first outcome of an ongoing project, and developing relationship, between Gaada and our local primary school and young artists.

Earlier this year, Gaada ran a series of workshops with each primary class. We asked the students to use both their observational skills and imagination to draw the details of the school and local community that they love and want to celebrate. Kristie who was in P7 at the time said “I like the way we designed it working with the Gaada artists out in the grounds.”.

From those source images, Gaada workers Vivian and Amy had the fun job of scaling up and layering the images before painting them into the murals. Special thanks to Hamnavoe Community Hall for housing us and our projector as we painted the artworks in secret!

Charlie who is now in S1 at Anderson High enjoyed the narratives hidden in the murals, saying “ I like how it looks like it was all done by the bairns and there’s stories happening in the pictures, like where the person says ‘Time for Math’ and the lizard shouts ‘No’!”

Well done to the pupils for working so hard and creating such beautiful artwork. To end, here’s some final thoughts from the pupils of Hamnavoe Primary School:

“They are very colourful and my pink piano is exactly the same as I drew it but bigger” - Tegan P7

I think it’s pretty cool” - Ella Mae P3

“I liked meeting the artists” - Cailen P4

“I think they are very brilliant and I like that a drawing by every pupil was included” - William P7

“It’s very good that everyone did a bit and I really hope it last for a long time – maybe longer than the last one!” - Stan, now in S1 at Anderson High School

“It was good that the whole school collaborated together to make it” - Jack, also in S1 at AHS

We will soon be announcing the next leg of the project with Hamnavoe Primary School - keep your eyes on our social media and News for updates.
