Building Materiality with Assemble
Renowned architecture collective Assemble have recently been in Shetland undertaking the initial phase to transform the former Burra Isle Methodist Chapel into an ambitious and accessible artist-run making facility and project space.
Together with Gaada, the team have been exploring the materiality of vernacular Shetland buildings in Burra and further afield. We’ve met many traditionally skilled Shetland locals and learnt about connections to unusual, Shetland-specific construction methods. These conversations and learning will underpin the redevelopment of Gaada’s 130 year old community building into a fantastic resource and platform and contribute toward growing links between artists in Shetland and the creative landscapes in neighbouring Scotland and Norway.
Gaada would like to thank our local network for being so generous during this trip both Burra History Group, Bridge End Outdoor Centre SCIO, Scord Quarry, Olnafirth Sea Farms, and Neil Pottinger Joinery.
Gaada would also like to acknowledge and thank our funders to date, who have kick-started this exciting redevelopment.
